Discussion Series - Red October

3 times, Sat, Oct 18 to Sat, Nov 01
Virtual Event
Join R&R for a reading and discussion group on the Russian Revolution! These discussions will be participatory and group-focused! A facilitator will give a brief leadoff overviewing the topics and readings, and participants will discuss the readings and discussion questions! In this series, we'll be studying the progression and development of proletarian struggle in Russia, before, during, and after the October revolution. Our first week features readings on the 1905 and February revolutions, our second week features letters and bulletins written while the October Revolution was in progress, and our third fourth and fifth weeks focus on Bolshevik Women's and Queer Liberation, Bolshevik Labor strategy, and Proletarians and Peasants in October respectively, each featuring an R&R guest author from our new magazine! Click here for our discussion syllabus to access all the readings and topics for the discussions, and RSVP using the form on the right to attend! These discussions are part of our Red October series, so make sure to check out our other events!

About Reform & Revolution

Reform & Revolution is a revolutionary Marxist caucus of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). We are fighting to end economic inequality, racism, sexism, and all forms of oppression, and organizing to build DSA into a mass socialist party that can overthrow capitalism. We are collaborating with other Marxists tendencies in DSA to build an organized Marxist current within DSA that can chart a course for political independence and party-building.

The resurgence of socialist ideas in the mainstream and the development of DSA represent the biggest opportunity in decades to build a mass socialist movement in the United States. We publish Reform & Revolution magazine to provide a forum for lively debate on the program and strategy that social movements need, drawing on lessons from past struggles. We seek to contribute to a living Marxism that analyzes new developments in society and engages in the ideological debates facing the left in the 21st century.

A central question activists are grappling with is the relationship between fighting for reforms and the need to fundamentally change the whole system. Our name is taken in honor of the answer that the famous Marxist Rosa Luxemburg gave to this question: “Between social reforms and revolution there exists for [the Marxist movement] an inseparable connection. The struggle for reforms is its means; the social revolution, its aim.”

We view the capitalist system—with its nonstop global competition for profits and power—as the main driver behind inequality, oppression, and the climate crisis. We stand for bringing the major corporations that dominate the economy into public ownership and replacing the anarchy of the market with democratic economic planning in order to meet the needs of people and the planet.

Capitalism is fundamentally undemocratic because the real levers of power are in the hands of billionaires who control the economy, the mass media, the government, and the state, including the army, courts, and the police. We advocate for a dramatic expansion of democracy, where all aspects of society—including our workplaces, neighborhoods and schools—are democratically run by popular assemblies and workers councils that are elected and subject to recall.

If you want to fight the billionaire class, if you want to resist all forms of oppression and fight for an eco-socialist world, join DSA at dsausa.org! If you also want to find out more about joining the Reform & Revolution caucus of DSA, please email us at info@ReformAndRevolution.org
