Learning from the October Revolution

One hundred and eight years ago this month, Russian workers rose up to overthrow their capitalist state and establish a workers government. The October Revolution has served as an inspiration for Communists and workers across the world ever since, and the politics and strategies of the Bolsheviks who led it must be studied and dynamically applied to our current conditions if we are to fight back against the right and win, and build a socialist world.

Throughout October and November, R&R will be celebrating and learning from the October Revolution. We'll be hosting reading and discussion groups, book talks featuring guest authors from across DSA and the socialist left, panel discussions, movie screenings, and more! We'll also be releasing R&R Magazine Issue #20, Red October, which will feature analyses of Bolshevik politics and strategy and their applications to our terrain of struggle.

Join R&R for a book talk on Student Radicals and the Rise of Russian Marxism! Many of the titans of the Russian socialist movement - including Chernyshevsky, Plekhanov, Lenin, and Trotsky - began their careers as revolutionaries during their time as undergraduate students at Russian universities. But histories of the 1905 and 1917 Russian Revolutions and of the Bolshevik party often ignore the important role that student unrest played in these events. In this work, the author explores the role of individual students and the student movement as a whole in the development of the Russian revolutionary movement from 1850 to 1917. The work demonstrates how student organizing played an important role in the history of the Russian Marxist movement, following student radicals as they pose and answer 'the student question:' what role can students play in the socialist movement. The work also considers the lessons of student organizing for student radicals organizing in the United States today.
