Many of the titans of the Russian socialist movement - including Chernyshevsky, Plekhanov, Lenin, and Trotsky - began their careers as revolutionaries during their time as undergraduate students at Russian universities. But histories of the 1905 and 1917 Russian Revolutions and of the Bolshevik party often ignore the important role that student unrest played in these events.

In this work, the author explores the role of individual students and the student movement as a whole in the development of the Russian revolutionary movement from 1850 to 1917. The work demonstrates how student organizing played an important role in the history of the Russian Marxist movement, following student radicals as they pose and answer 'the student question:' what role can students play in the socialist movement.

The work also considers the lessons of student organizing for student radicals organizing in the United States today.
